James Crouch Obituary

James Robert Crouch was received to eternal life April 15, 2024. He was born in Dallas, Texas, the eldest son of Crockett Louis Crouch and Mary Elizabeth Braman Crouch on March 4, 1935.

Jim attended school in Lockhart, Texas and graduated with the class of 1953.  He attended Texas A&M University and was a member of the Aggie Band.  Jim met the love of his life, Barbara Sue Jackson in Port Lavaca, Texas and they were married there on June 25, 1955.  Jim and Barbara lived in Jacksonville, North Carolina while Jim served as Lance Corporal in the Marines.  Upon discharge from the service, Jim and Barbara moved back to Lockhart to raise their family.  Jim attended Southwest Texas State University where he received a Business Degree.  Known for his quick wit and dry sense of humor, Jim was active in the Lockhart community working as a radio disc jockey for KHRB Radio (and known locally as the “Mouth of the South”).  He was a summer manager of the Lockhart State Park Pool, and a boy scout leader.  He was a member and officer of the Lockhart Jaycees.  Later, he worked for Voigt Construction and Corral Industries before turning his interest to becoming a saltwater fishing guide.  In 1980, Jim and Barbara moved to Port O’Connor, Texas and he established the Can’t Miss Saltwater Charter Service.  They had an active life in Port O’Connor and hosted many fishing guests and friends at their home.  Jim and Barbara enjoyed beachcombing and spending time on Matagorda Island.  The beachcombing excursions resulted in bringing home driftwood which Jim would work into carvings of Texas shorebirds.  In 2005, Jim and Barbara retired to Bastrop, Texas to be closer to their children.  They enjoyed their home and watching the wildlife that came through their yard.  Jim was very proudly an Aggie, and his favorite color was maroon!

Jim is preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Nancy, his wife Barbara, and infant son James Louis.

He is survived by his children, Joni Groom and Jimmy Crouch, grandchildren Constance Crouch and Shawn Crouch (Tara), great grandchildren Arthur Louis Crouch and Charlotte Ann Crouch. Jim is also survived by his brother, Eugene Louis Crouch and numerous nieces and other family members.   The family would like to thank the staff at Lost Pines Nursing Home for their care for our father.
