Faye E Brewington. Born 3/29/31 in Coudersport, Pa and Deceased 5/26/24 at 93 years young in Red Rock, Texas where she lived out her last two years with her son in love, Jonathan, her daughter, Naomi and her great grandson, Justin in their home. Four generations lived together so as to spend as much time with Faye, lovingly named Gigi, as possible. During this time, Tamara, her only Grand Daughter and great grandson, Cody, spent these years serving as co-caregivers.
Faye was a loving mother, grand mother and Gigi, she was a beloved, Aunt Faye and was adopted, so to speak, and named Auntie by Lily and Jessica and their respective families. She was also known as Sister Brewington and was loved dearly from her most recent church in El Paso for the past 30 plus years. She had many of the same neighbors on her street where she lived well over 50 years. She will definitely be missed.
She was a smart dresser, was kind hearted, selfless, and always made people laugh. Her highschool year book nick-named her George, either because her brother George and she were very close or that was just her sense of humor. No one will ever know for sure. Faye loved spending time together with family and close friends.
She was the youngest of a family of eight. The first born son was 25 years her elder, and there was such a difference in ages that when Faye was born she was quite literally the baby of the family. As she grew, she reached out to her older sisters and helped care for their children many a day or night.
She loved baking large batches of 300 or more Sour Cream Cookies for special occasions, all on her own while her mama kept company and chatted with her. It was something they did together. She had countless stories of her older siblings playing pranks on her. She was a Tom boy for sure…she was out doors most of the day, climbed trees and also used to street ski on home made sleds along Route 6 with her friends!! She was late coming home one evening in a rain storm and she hopped over a fence at the split second it was struck by lightening! Ouch!!!!! Another time she was running from a bull that was down in the pasture and she had to clear that same fence right before it almost got her.
She volunteered in the church and taught Sunday School when she was just 15. She was very active in her younger years and one of the things that made her sad was when she wasn’t able to go and do as she once did. She attended Coudersport elementary and then Coudersport Highschool and she graduated with her school mates in 1949.
She had a very special relationship with George, her elder brother. His daughter Becky said, not a year passed that they didn’t call eachother on their birthdays.
Her nieces, Joyce, Harold’s daughter and Becky, George’s daughter were only 10 years younger than their Aunt Faye and absolutely loved her. They especially loved it when she would hand down her upscale clothes to them. It was a thing!
Her niece, Kathy said as she grew up she worked at the Ice Mine in Potter County, at the Root Beer Stand on Route 6, and Mackey’s Restaurant on Main street in downtown Coudersport, across from the court house. She was the most asked for waitress at the restaurant and Father O’Connell from Saint Eulalia always asked to be seated in her section, so it was said by Becky, another one of her nieces. She worked at the Telephone company in Olean, New York and moved from there to live with one of her older brothers Dan and his wife in Washington DC.
It was there that she met her first husband, Robert. He always said, he fell in love with her the moment he laid eyes on her, that’s when he asked her which wedding ring she wanted… as she was admiring some in a jewelry store front window. Yes…she fell for that line and they got married soon after. He swooped her up and moved her to El Paso, Texas to be near his family where she learned how to cook Mexican food and even learned some Spanish. It was there they spent the next 25 years together, until his passing in 1983.
She had a beautiful relationship with Robert’s family throughout, especially his only sister Teresa, who invited them over many a Sunday night where countless memories were made. Rose, one of the eldest nieces said Faye was their favorite Aunt. She and Robert took nieces and nephews; Rose, Oscar, MaryLou and Nacho to meet her family in Pennsylvania twice. Those trips were very memorable to her.
During their marriage, she worked as a PBX Operator at the St Joseph’s Medical Center and achieved Employee of the Year in 1974. She and Robert took in his second cousin, Mary and she was like a sister to their daughter. She worked the night shift for five years so she would be home when her daughter returned from school. She was the first face the public saw when visiting the hospital.
Later in life, she married Charles. One of the activities they enjoyed together was dancing. He taught her all about camping, hiking, vegetable gardening, home improvement, birds and roses and they had a wonderful 25 years together until he passed in 2009.
She enjoyed being outdoors in the sun and she loved sunbathing. She preferred El Paso for that reason, especially. She spent her later years enjoying her backyard and feeding the birds.
She was the 8th and youngest beloved child of Fred and Mary Hackett. She was preceeded in death by her mother and father and her siblings, Lawrence, Norma, Harold, Dan, George, June, and Fred Jr. also by her first husband Bob and second husband Charles.
Faye was survived by her “Number One Son”, Don as she lovingly called him and her “Favorite Daughter”, Naomi. Her grand children, Tamara, David, and Steven and her great grand children, Jessica, Justin, Cody, Owen, Blake, Annie, Ethan and Nolan. She loved them all dearly and it blessed her day everytime she got to see or hear from any one of them.
Her mom and dad began having family reunions when she was just a child of which she attended many throughout her life. This August would have marked the 84th Hackett Family Reunion in Coudersport, Pennsylvania. She will definitely be there in spirit.
She will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
